Level of Response

Level 3: Localization

Description: The student attempts to locate and/or find the sound source.
Localization is usually very easy to accurately observe and report. This level of hearing response is demonstrated by some physical movement toward the sound source. Often, children will turn their head, shift their eyes, or reach for a sound source. Localization responses occur in typically hearing children at about 6 months of age.

Localization is an important listening skill because it supports the cognitive development of identifying sound sources (knowing what or who made the sound), spatial and environmental awareness, object permanence, and general sense of well-being.
