Level of Response
Level 1: Awareness / Reflexive
Description: The student demonstrates motoric responses indicating he/she is aware of sound.
The Awareness/Reflexive level of response is usually brief in nature and may leave the observer unsure of what they saw. Awareness/Reflexive responses are often difficult to test by recreating the acoustic environment because children habituate to stimuli rapidly. For instance, a child might startle to a loud noise one time, but not startle to the same loud noise one minute later. For the purpose of the FHI, it is appropriate to note the occurrence of an Awareness/Reflexive level response, even though the observer may not be able to elicit another identical response.
Sustained Awareness/Reflexive responses elevate into Attention/Alerting responses.
