Level of Response
Level 5: Recognition
Description: The student responds to sound in a patterned way.
Recognition level of responses are characterized by the hearer demonstrating that they "know" what the sound was. They may know who made the sound, what is going to happen next. For example, they may expect a person to arrive following a knock on the door.
Recognition level of response causes observers to say things like "that is his favorite song", "she knows her dad's here", "he knows he's in trouble". and "she gets upset when the baby cries".
Recognition is a very important level of hearing because it demonstrates cognitive development, memory, personality, and creates a more meanigful environment for a child. It is the highest level of use of hearing that can be demonstrated without use of language.
